Stuck In The 60's Band

It has been brought to my attention that I have left out at least 1 more Band who played around the same time as the other bands I had listed on the previous page.

David Huggins has just sent me some Photos I had never seen of the "Hustlers" and other Bands and a business card of  the " ROGUES

Photos provided by David Oscar Huggins, Conway, Arkansas.  Digital scanning courtesy of E.J. Huggins.

Bands and band members would come and go for lots of "Good" reasons ......  like "My Girlfriend Doesn't want me to be in that band anymore"  soooooooooooo...what was a guy to do but quit that band and maybe form a new band.   I have seen or Talked to all the guys on this Card in the last year or so except for John Burke,   if anyone has info on him please email me and let me know at  lbarnett@mywdo.com

above:  David Huggins (fender Stratocaster) and  Jim Leslie - left handed Bass player.  Notice the Orange, Paisley, Neru Jacket worn by Huggins.  Proper attire to go along with the "British Invasion".   Circ: 1966, Carlsbad Senior High School Cafeteria.

Another group listed on the previous page was the "Sapiens".  Below is a picture of that group playing in the Old Mid High School Cafeteria, probably late 1964 or early 1965.   Very Handsome Group with their "Cool, Black Turtle Necks."

Pictured, left - right is

Mike Bartlett emailed me and told me the drummer in this pic and the one below was not Jimmy Wiseman but was actually Alan Harris, Jimmy had told me it wasn't him in these shots but David and I couldn't figure out who it was (old age) but thanks to Mike Bartlett for setting us right.

Mike also confirmed the "Hustlers" practice photos below were taken at his Grand Mothers house on Mesquite St.  Thanks again Mike.

Below "The Hustlers" playing at a Battle Dance, 1964 Old Mid High School Cafeteria.  Pic on left,  Huggins, Barnett, Gettings.  Pic on Right, Bartlett, Alan Harris, Huggins.  Notice the "HUSTLERS" sign taped to the wall.

Check out the White Sweat Shirts we all have on.   Gettings was a great artist and painted wild "Cartoon Charters" of  each of the band members on the back of those Sweat Shirts, the fronts were adorned with Stenciled letter of the "Hustlers"  I still have mine as pictured below.

Below are some additional Pics of the Original "Hustlers" at a practice, Barnett, Gettings, Huggins, Conger, Bartlett.            I know the whereabouts of Huggins (Conway, Arkansas), Bartlett (Dallas, Texas), Glen Gettings (Musical Director for Epcot Center, Disney World, Florida), Barnett (Carlsbad) but..... I have never been able to locate Bobby Jo Conger.  If anyone out there has information on him please email me at  lbarnett@mywdo.com.   Congers Dad was into Real Estate in Carlsbad at the time.  They lived on the Corner of Elma Dr. and Mesa St. 1 block South of Riverside Dr.  There was a older brother, Billy Conger graduated in about 1964.  Billy also played Drums and played xylophones at the "Silver Spur Lounge (Stevens) on a regular basis, he was great.

Below: Original Sheet Music bought at Garvins Jewlery in Carlsbad "The Ballad of Jed Clampett" aka "The Beverley Hillbillies".   At the request of our parents David, John Roberts and I took music lessons from Mrs. Batey. who taught out of her house over on 1st St.   In the fall of 1963 Mrs. Batey planned a music Recital at the Library Annex.  Huggins and I finally talked her into letting us play something other than "Classical" stuff during the Recital.   We played the "Hillbilles" song and "Pipeline" and it was way "Cool" just ask John Roberts.

Here are a couple of links to some old 8mm Movie clips, I digitized the film and have compressed the files as small as possible but they are still large.  If you are running high speed broadband ISP they will probably load in 30 - 60 seconds.  If your on Dial-Up don't try it.   These Clips are short and you have to look quick.... but they are rare, not much 8mm film around now.

, 1965 Pecan Festival Parade, All Girl band Playing on back of truck, Georgia Payne, Cindy Payne, Mary Lynn Calicoat, and Unknown..... Second truck has "The Nomads" Tommy Riley, Lanny Barnett, David Huggins, Jim Rhodes (singing) and Glen Gettings.

1965 Pecan Festival Parade, This band is the "Majestics" Freddy Snow, Ronnie Cannon, James Lee, Charlie White, Ricky Davidson.  They were advertising for "Als DiscoTeen" what a place to play in.

1965 Pecan Festival Parade, Thunder Bird Indian dancers performing.  I know there must be some of the "Class of 1967" in this clip.

This was a very cold, mid November Morning, (about 35 degrees) The Parade started at the old Sears building on Canyon and Green and went down Canyon St. to Church and then to the Beach parking lot.  The organizers wanted us to play all the way and then play some more when we reached the Beach.  It was so cold you couldn't feel you fingers on the strings. When we reached the beach we jumped off the truck and got into cars to warm up. The heck with playing.  You can see the Thunder Birds with very little clothing on were freezing.  They would stop dancing and run to get into their truck.   The film was shot across the street from the old "What-A-Burger"

"Stuck In The 60's Band"  has developed a smattering of followers over the last couple of years.   The couple pictured below put it this way

"WE ARE YOU BIGGEST GROUPIES"  Pudgy Pendergrass and Shirley Bridges have been at every performance since we started playing again.  Thanks to you and to all who come and enjoy "Turnin The Clock Back"  We love doin it!
